Did you know?

Many exceptional children fall under the radar.

You may know they are MORE than other kids, but you don't know how or why.

They may be more curious, more emotional, more active, more aggressive, more sensitive, more jumpy, more spirited, more intense.

Some kids are just more!

Whatever they are, they ARE.

Whatever they do, they DO.

Whatever they feel, they FEEL.

As the adult in their lives, it’s very-very exhausting.  At the end of the day you are emotionally wrung out, physically exhausted and extremely frustrated.

Is your child gifted?

COMMON SIGNS OF GIFTED CHILDREN:

  • Early development — they learned to walk, talk, or read earlier than their peer group
  • Advanced speech capabilities — they use sophisticated vocabulary at a young age
  • Constant curiosity — they are always asking “Where? What? Why?”
  • Sponge-like absorption — they absorb large quantities of information...and retain it
  • Intense focus on specific topics — they hook onto a topic with the tenacity of a bulldog
  • Creative thinking — they find interesting ways of solving problems or playing games
  • Preference for self-teaching — they much prefer learning on their own
  • Great sense of humour — they are masters of witty comments, puns, and plays on words
  • Perfectionism — they often get frustrated because they need things to be perfect
  • Preference for older kids — they prefer the company of kids above their age group
  • Analytical tendencies — they like comparing things or making rules about everything.

COMMON STRUGGLES OF

VERY-VERY CHILDREN:

My child is not gifted, he's just more.

YOU MAY BE RIGHT. AFTER ALL, YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD BEST. BUT SOMETIMES GIFTEDNESS IS MASKED BY DIFFICULTY.

IS YOUR CHILD STRUGGLING WITH:

 Boredom

 Social skills

 Accepting authority

 Sensory processing

 Self-esteem

 Emotional regulation

 Personality clashes

 Overexcitability

If you find yourself nodding to several of the above,

there’s a good chance your child is gifted.

WHAT IS A

GIFTED CHILD?

A gifted child shows signs of asynchronous development: their intellectual capabilities are ahead of their chronological age.  But very often, their emotional side is in inverse proportion. And it's the gap that makes things hard.

Gifted children bring unique joys:

You can...

  • reason with them from a young age
  • share sights & experiences that their peers would not appreciate
  • enjoy being with them and talking to them — they share your interests
  • rest assured that they’ll hit developmental milestones on time.

But it’s not all

peaches and cream!

Gifted children have unique struggles.

They often struggle...

  • Socially — they have a hard time connecting with kids their own age
  • Behaviorally — they are bored in class, so they tend to act out
  • Academically — they score high on IQ tests, but can’t hit an 85 in school
  • Emotionally — they tend to be highly sensitive and easily frustrated.

When gifted children

don’t get the support

they need, they...

coast through school without acquiring critical life skills — because everything came so easy

grow detached and disenfranchised — because everything is so boring

become even more socially awkward and withdrawn — because no one understands them.

And when parents

of gifted children

don’t get the support

they need, they…

start questioning their abilities as a parent

feel that they are fighting the whole world to help their child

argue with their spouses about how to handle the behaviors

collapse under the weight of the child’s bottomless needs.

Any of these statements

sound familiar?

The million dollar question:

What is going on?

You want answers.

More, you want solutions

(Just not for a million dollars)

Hi. My name is Zipporah (Goldblatt) Osrin, and I’m a Gifted Education Specialist. (QTS, G.A.T.E.)

Hailing from a British family steeped in chinuch, I started my career as a regular teacher.

But after years of struggling with some of my own children — until realizing their giftedness was the driving agitator — I developed a burning passion to help the silent but troubled gifted children in our communities. I asked myself:  In the Orthodox Jewish world, who is answering their silent cry?

Today, I bring the best of gifted education research to the communities I love.

Drawing on over 15 years in the field — including university programs, extensive research, and contacts with specialists  — I’ve developed a clear and easy methodology that empowers parents & teachers to help gifted students become calm, happy, and well-rounded people — without spending thousands of dollars or hours of their day.

My programs fully align with Torah values. Every one of my courses and training sessions has been reviewed and approved.

“He went from ‘failing student’ to ‘star’”

The school psychologist called recently, saying: “He’s gone from being a failing student to a star. What did you do?’” I answered: “We put him in Mrs. Osrin’s life skills groups for gifted children.”

My son is very sensitive and could not learn in the classroom, so he consistently underachieved. Mrs. Osrin taught him how to cope with his environment, how to understand himself, and how to ask for what he needs. She helped him develop self-regulation and study skills. We always knew he was capable — now we finally see it happening.

“A different kid”

We were struggling with Yosef, a boy who got bullied incessantly by his classmates. A highly sensitive kid, Yosef cried easily and never stood up for himself. After weeks of trying to get the issue under control, we noticed a sudden change: Yosef was more confident and less sensitive. The bullying in the schoolyard dropped dramatically; for the first time, he was enjoying recess with friends. He was a different kid.

We called Yosef’s mother and asked “what happened at home to cause such a change?” She told us she sent him to Mrs. Osrin for life skills while simultaneously taking Mrs. Osrin’s course.

Since then, we’ve sent another four children to Mrs. Osrin. With each, the change has been remarkable.

“My whole house is calmer”

Another course claiming to change the world? I was skeptical. I did not believe Mrs. Osrin’s course would help. But within three weeks of starting, I could see the difference in my child. She was calmer and less frustrated — because for the first time, I was able to meet her needs.

Today, when things get tough, I can pinpoint the problem — and offer practical solutions. I am no longer helpless. What a world of a difference! My whole house is calmer.

“I had taken all the regular parenting courses…

nothing helped”

I used to think I was crazy. Or maybe my child was crazy. Why else were none of the proven parenting methods working? I had taken all the regular parenting courses but the techniques just didn’t work.  I began to wonder if I was the problem.

Today, I know I am not crazy — and neither is my child. We just think differently from other people. Today, I know I have to use the specific techniques which help gifted kids. I’ve become a confident and empowered mother.

Don’t wait until it’s too late

Gifted children need support when they’re young

The longer their needs are unmet, the more likely they are to:

  • develop psychological problems
  • become moody and aggressive
  • withdraw into themselves.

Gifted children who

don’t feel understood are

at high risk of dropping out — of school, and of Yiddishkeit

“I sat in cheider for 10 years. 10 years!  And I could have fit all that learning into two.  Why should I carry on to yeshiva? To schlep through another five years of torture?”

(B.M. age 14, said this directly to a rebbi)

A report on high school dropouts in America by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (2006) showed that 88% of high school dropouts had passing grades: they dropped out due to boredom.

Real Stories...Real Struggles

“My daughter had all sorts of questions. She was also bored.  She spent her time dreaming up questions to annoy her teachers. Her teachers found her challenging and chutzpadik.  They truly did not have time to deal with her questions in class but unfortunately, she never received the answers she needed.

She began to feel that her teachers resented her and did not enjoy teaching her. She began to feel that they were not answering because there were no answers. Her love of debate and seeking of truth turned into an aggressive battle against anyone and everyone connected to limudei kodesh.

Eventually, she dropped out of school and is learning limudei chol online. It was only when we did her pre-college testing that we discovered her IQ was over 140, which explained so many things!

But it may have been too late. Today, her connection to Yiddishkeit is weak and we can only daven that she finds the answers she is no longer seeking.”
