No Ma, but why?

Why is the grass green? Why did Hashem make the world? Why is my hair curly?  Why do we go to school?  Why do people die?  Why do people live?  Why (I could go on forever but why would I?)

What questions are easily answered.

So are wheres or whens. (Max you could always look them up on Professor Google.)

But whys are tough.  Decidedly tough.  Tougher than untying knots in your 9 year old’s shoelaces. That kind of tough.

The make-you-feel-hot-under-the-collar-and frustrated kind of tough.

Personally, I love philosophical debates.  They scratch a deep inside itch. They make me feel alive. But.  They can also leave me feeling hopelessly inadequate.

How in the world do you discuss life and death with a 5 year old?

How in the world do you build Emunah in a teen?

How…. (ad infinitum)

These questions need answers. And the answers are there.  But let me introduce you to a beautiful secret.  They don’t need answers NOW.  Your child needs to know that answers exist. They need to know that you are not scared of the questions. They need to feel that you are there for them on their quest for knowledge.

And that is all.

Best answer:  That’s a fascinating question.  Should we look into it together?
