My child's not a genius

My child’s not a genius

It’s an interesting paradox.

Every mother believes her child is special but no mother wants to believe that her child is different.  Somehow “different” feels like a derogatory term.

So many mothers believe that their child is clever, intelligent or whatever  as long as they fall within the norm.

And what is that mysterious norm? It’s who we are, plus the twenty percent of people who are above us and twenty percent who are below. That’s normal.

And everyone else is not normal.

Isn’t that sad? A child with a super-high potential is considered not normal? Is made to feel that they are different? That the people around them look up to them or down at them but never accept them as equals?

So what do we do if we have a child who is above the norm?  Do we try and change them to make them normal?

Or do we have the courage to say “My child is gifted. No, not the absent minded professor type.  Just gifted. And I’m proud of them.”
